week 3 | medium is the message

What the heck is “the medium” anyway? What consitues the middle, the essence?
I suppose in simple terms… its what sits between the bread in a sandwich. 🍔

One could presume the “medium” would be a social media platform, or a mass-media news outlet which provides the “message” to an audience. BUT in using Lasswell’s formula as an example the middle – the channel – is the medium. Which in the process of the content being distributed becomes the message, and the medium as an extension of the creator.

Here i’ve created my own GIF, using procreate. Did it come out the way I intended? Perhaps… but the way you see it now on the blog isnt the way i saw it on my iPad. – so now my initial “message” has been shifted through the change of platforms. And if then again put in into another GIF “generator”, it’s changed again

  1. Your blog post is really insightful. The use of the infographic depicting the Lasswell Formula was super helpful and super creative, I finally understand it ! you were able to capture the essence of the lecture. We both were able to explore different themes from the lecture, which is amazing to see what we take as the main points and what we want our readers to understand from the lecture. 🙂

  2. I love this take on your blog! At first, I was a bit confused but the way you interpreted it yourself and described it more it became so much clearer. I do love the gif you made along with the post, and adding in that diagram really helped solidify with what you were trying to say. I will continue to use the ‘sandwich’ method of understanding and looking into Lasswell’s formula x

  3. This post is so informative! While Lasswell’s formula is a theory with extra steps, I find it works best for myself also in terms of understanding the medium and the message. Both our posts focused on the medium heavily, and we both dug deeper into studies to find a definition but also use our own knowledge. While I didn’t include Lasswell in my own post, we have similarities in our remediations! I chose to use GIPHY and used an ouija board, definitely an unconventional medium. Using procreate was the perfect touch, and is a great example of curating content and customising your work to better reflect the content.
